Weld joint type
Butt Joint
A butt joint places two members edge to edge in the same plane — the simplest joint to draw and the one that most often needs edge preparation to reach full penetration.
Geometry and preparation
| Configuration | Two members lying in the same plane, joined along their abutting edges. |
|---|---|
| Edge preparation | Square edge up to roughly 3/16 in; single-V above that; double-V, U or J on thick plate to cut filler volume and balance distortion. |
| Strength | A full-penetration butt joint develops the full strength of the base metal, which is why it is specified on pressure and structural work. |
Characteristics
- The only common joint that can be made with no weld metal above the surface of the members.
- Needs edge preparation above about 3/16 in to reach the root with the arc.
- Root opening and land thickness control how much penetration the root pass achieves.
- Distortion is angular: the joint pulls closed as the weld cools, so tack sequence and a slight preset matter.
- Backing bars, backing welds or back gouging are the usual routes to full penetration when only one side is accessible.

Where it is used
- Pressure vessel and pipe seams
- Structural plate splices
- Tank and vessel shells
- Sheet metal panels joined edge to edge
Butt Joint — common questions
Do butt joints need edge preparation?
Below about 3/16 in a square-edge butt joint welds through without preparation. Above that the arc cannot reach the root, so the edges are bevelled into a V, U or J groove.
What is the strongest welding joint?
A full-penetration butt joint develops the full strength of the base metal, which makes it the strongest joint configuration. The trade-off is that it demands the most preparation and the most careful fit-up.
What is a root opening in a butt joint?
The gap between the two members at the bottom of the groove before welding. It gives the arc access to the root; too little causes lack of penetration, too much causes burn-through.
Why do butt joints distort?
Weld metal shrinks as it cools. On a single-V joint most of the weld sits near the top surface, so the joint pulls angularly closed. Presetting the members open, alternating passes, or using a double-V balances it.
