Polarity: Runs on AC or either DC polarity. DCEN is common for sheet and light plate; AC works well on transformer machines.

Characteristics

Storage and handling

Dry room-temperature storage. No oven required, but keep it sealed.

  • Rutile iron-powder coatings tolerate normal shop humidity.
  • Reconditioning, if needed, is 250–300 °F (120–150 °C) for one hour.
  • Discard rods whose coating has absorbed enough moisture to flake or swell.

Welding tips

  • Drag it — a light touch with the coating riding the plate gives the cleanest bead.
  • For 1/4 in plate fillets, a 1/8 in rod at 130–145 A is a good starting point.
  • If slag is hard to chip, you are probably running too cold or too slow.
  • Use E7014 where you would reach for E6013 but need the extra 10 ksi and more fill per rod.

E7014 frequently asked questions

What is the difference between E7014 and E6013?

E7014 has iron powder in the coating, giving a higher deposition rate, medium rather than shallow penetration, and a 70 ksi deposit versus 60 ksi. They run similarly; E7014 simply fills faster and stronger.

Is E7014 low hydrogen?

No. It is a rutile iron-powder electrode. For low-hydrogen requirements use E7018, E7016 or E7028.

What amperage for 1/8 in E7014?

110–160 A, with 130–145 A typical for 1/4 in plate fillets. Back off 10–15% for vertical and overhead.

Can E7014 be used on structural steel?

It deposits 70 ksi weld metal and is widely used in general fabrication, but most structural codes call for low-hydrogen electrodes on prequalified joints. Check the WPS before substituting it for E7018.

Do you drag or whip E7014?

Drag. The heavy iron-powder coating is designed to be rested against the work and pulled along, which controls arc length automatically.
